Double-Sided Seaming Tape: This seam tape is specially made for temporary applications, ideal over hardscapes, such as asphalt and cement. Double-sided seam tape is used to secure the perimeter line and interior sections of the turf directly to the hardscape surface.

(optional) Drain Tile Drainage sub-base material: Proper drainage is crucial to all artificial grass installations, especially those installed over hardscapes like patios and rooftops, and Drain Tile will assist in increasing the overall drainage rate of the area. Drain Tile is a sub-surface gid that is installed beneath the turf to collect and redirect water away to an exit drain or predetermined point. As a result of Drain Tile 0.75-inch depth and air void, air easily circulates and water passes through rapidly – helping keep turf cooler, further preventing odor and bacteria buildup, as well as reinforcing injury prevention by improving the surface’s shock absorbency. Additionally, AirDrain mats can hold up to a ½ gallon of water per square foot, if needed, until it can reach the exit drain – allowing the turf surface to remain dry.

(optional) Shockpad: An optional item, the 8mm shockpad is a great addition to a patio turf project for extra comfort. The shockpad can adhere directly to a hardscape surface or AirDrain mat using the 29 oz Ultrabond glue, which is also used to adhere turf to the surface of the shockpad.

The Reality of Artificial Turf Maintenance

“But there has to be some work involved in artificial turf maintenance, right?”

Yes, and while it’s certainly easier to take care of than natural grass, there is still some routine work involved. The good news is it’s even easier than other household routines, like vacuuming your carpet or changing the oil in your car. Here, we’ll look at just what it takes to keep your artificial turf looking good and performing at 100%.

Brushing (Traffic Patterns and Yard Debris)

Periodic brushing is usually needed.

Speaking of vacuuming, have you ever run one over a rug and noticed that it seems to become plusher? That’s because the rug fibers have been pressed flat by foot traffic and are pulled back up by the brushing and suction of the vacuum. Artificial turf works the same way. The fibers can become pressed flat over time from traffic, so periodic brushing is usually needed to return the grass to its like-new state.

This is easily accomplished with a regular turf broom, but a power broom can be of tremendous help as well. Power brooms are compact, easy to use, and make the work go a lot faster.

If you choose the right turf and infill amount for the level of traffic you expect, you won’t need to do much brushing. Once every few months could be sufficient, or even once a year. It certainly won’t be anywhere as frequent or intensive as mowing.

If your yard has leaves or other debris, a leaf blower on a moderate setting will be sufficient to remove it. Just be sure not to move too much of the infill around. Purchase Green’s push broom previously mentioned is another great tool for debris clean-up. However, never use a metal-bristled rake, as this will damage the backing of the turf.

Sanitizing (From Kids and Pets)

Keeping your turf clean is a breeze if proper precautions are taken.

Sanitization is most often an artificial turf maintenance concern for pet owners but can apply to anyone with a synthetic lawn that is frequently used. Most of the time, routine cleaning can be accomplished with a specially-designed cleaning agent and a garden hose.

When odors do appear, the cause can almost always be traced back to an improper infill. If you’re a pet owner, choosing an antibacterial pet grass and an antibacterial infill will go a long way toward keeping your lawn smelling fresh. Additionally, it’s important to make sure the area of installation drains properly, allowing rainwater or your Turf Bomb to effectively flush odorous microbes away. To that end, the area needs to have a grade, even if only a slight one, as well as the appropriate subbase mixture tightly compacted. Taking these precautions while planning and installing your grass will make cleaning a breeze.

Weeding

Installing artificial turf doesn’t always result in a weed-free yard, but still significantly reduces the amount of weeding needed. 

Do weeds grow through artificial turf? Yes, they sometimes do. And when they do, they’re just as annoying as when they appear on a natural lawn. However, artificial lawns make it much easier to control weeds. The secret, yet again, is in the installation process. Weed barrier is the best first defense against weeds. It’s a filament installed beneath the grass that blocks the growth of any plant.

With this countermeasure in place, weed-killing chemicals are no longer necessary, making your soil and surrounding plant life much healthier. While you may still find an occasional weed that crops up around the border of the installation, weeding is largely a thing of the past for owners of artificial turf.

Conclusion

So, how much work is artificial turf maintenance? Compared to a natural lawn, barely any. The most important factor in making sure your turf is ultra low-maintenance is a proper installation.

Is crumb rubber unsafe? Is it actually safe? There have been various studies conducted on the safety of crumb rubber but at this point it would be premature to draw a conclusion either way. So let’s look into what crumb rubber is and why Purchase Green doesn’t carry it.

What is crumb rubber?

Crumb rubber infill is made by grinding up old tires. At first, the solution was praised as an innovative, environmentally friendly strategy to reuse the mountains of old tires sitting in landfills. However, in recent years, anecdotal evidence has begun to shed light on a potential link between the infill and instances of cancer, especially among goalies who frequently come into contact or even ingest/inhale the tiny black pellets common to artificial grass sports fields across the country.

What we use instead

We Recommend HeroFill

At Purchase Green, we don’t sell nor do we recommend crumb rubber for residential landscaping. For one thing, as an infill it actually makes grass hotter. The reality is that there are better, more advanced infill systems than crumb rubber. At Purchase Green we only carry the best products, and crumb rubber is not the best product. Instead, we offer products such as HeroFill.

• HeroFill 12/20 Infill is infused with Lonza Microbial Control (Zinc Omadine, Zoe Antimicrobial and Pyrithione) anti-fungal protection. This fungistatic agent inhibits the growth of mildew and algae. This product’s unique biocide chemistry controls odors caused by mildew, mold, fungus, and algae and significantly reduces the odor caused by ammonia buildup in pet urine.

While artificial lawns are decidedly a lower maintenance option than traditional, natural lawns, they do still require some routine cleaning and other maintenance on a regular basis. Here’s what you can expect for biweekly and monthly maintenance, as well as how to deal with pet waste and odors, and other special circumstances that may pop up with artificial grass. Biweekly Maintenance

As advertised, artificial grass is extremely low maintenance. In fact, the only suggested weekly or biweekly maintenance routine is to remove any large debris that might be laying on the surface and to do a light rinse with the hose as you see fit. Removing rocks, twigs, or other scraps from the surface of the lawn is often an aesthetic preference, and a light rinse with a hose can wash away dust or smaller debris from inside the individual blades of grass.

Monthly Maintenance

On a monthly basis, depending on your family’s normal foot traffic and level of use, your yard might need a thorough “fluffing” – to keep the grass blades standing tall.

You’ll want to use a flexible landscape rake – such as Purchase Green’s Turf Broom. Never use metal rakes, as they can seriously damage the backing material and fibers of the turf.

Rake the lawn to remove the larger particles and then work in a methodical fashion to remove any particles that might be buried deeper in the pile. Finally, run the brush again in the opposite direction to re-position non-erect bristles back into their normal standing position.

To make the task even easier, most Purchase Green stores offer a walk-behind Power Broom for serious fluffing. Contact your local store for rental and delivery rates.

Pet Issues

While it may not seem obvious, artificial lawns actually stand up quite well to the demands of pet use. First, the effects of pets running and lounging on the lawn are usually minimal, as their paws won’t damage the blades. Although, in some cases, a dog (or, really any other heavy object left on the turf for an extended period) can cause the blades to flatten down over time. This situation can be quickly remedied by using a Turf Broom on the area and moving the blades back into place.

More to the point, cleaning animal waste from an artificial lawn is pretty much the same process as it is on a natural grass lawn. The bulk of the waste is removed with a plastic bag or “pooper-scooper”, just like on any other surface. Afterward, a light rinse with hose water will ensure all urine and other waste particles are flushed down through the permeable turf backing and into the soil underneath – rather than sitting and collecting on the surface.

Lastly, it’s recommended to use a deodorizer on a monthly basis, such as Purchase Green’s Turf Cleaner. Turf Wash is a topical enzymatic cleaning solution that is best used as a preventive measure. Bacteria

Especially with pets, bacteria can build up from leftover urine and waste. But, so long as the turf is regularly cleaned in the manners described above, bacteria build-up should not occur. If you are still concerned, however, by the prevalence of bacteria in your turf – read this article on how artificial grass prevents bacteria build-up.

Burns

Artificial lawns are robust but one area where they must be proactively guarded is when it comes to burns. Everything from cigarettes and embers from the charcoal grill to battery acid and strong bases can burn or discolor artificial grass. That’s why it’s essential to keep these items away from your lawn. In other words, do not cook, repair mechanical items or otherwise expose the lawn to harsh chemicals or you could end up having a burnt patch on your lawn that will need repairing.

Special Circumstances

Like any other surface, your lawn will be subjected to any number of stain-producing materials including blood, chewing gum, assorted food items, and other edible contaminants. You should clean the area as soon as possible to avoid staining. Fortunately, artificial turf is stain-resistant and rarely discolors due to these materials, but keeping the surface clean and attending to any spills or other staining materials is always best practice.

When picking the right artificial grass, it all boils down to those four things. 

Applications

Application is the kind of project you’re working on, whether that’s installing your dream putting green, an area for your pets, a playground, a sports field, or just doing some landscaping. Knowing what the project is will be crucial to picking the best fake grass for installation.

If you are looking for artificial grass to go in your backyard, and your pets will be using the space to do their business, there are a few things we can do to eliminate odors and make clean-up easier. A big portion of this has to do with the infill you select, which we’ll discuss later, but let’s just focus on the grass itself for now. All our grasses are “pet-friendly” meaning that they drain quickly to help get rid of waste. But, a grass that is shorter in height like Fescue Supreme will be much easier to clean. But if you don’t have any pets using your backyard, then you won’t have to worry about the high pile height of a grass like Arizona Platinum Spring.

Traffic

It’s also super important for the durability of your grass to know how much traffic will be taking place on the turf. If your project is more for aesthetics and show than for heavy activity, then a great, low-traffic choice would be something like St Augustine. But if there are going to be kids, adults, or pets using the space a lot, a grass with outstanding memory (like a memory foam mattress) and high durability would be the best fake grass to choose; something like Neo Terra 80 would be an excellent option.

Blade Profile

The blade profile of the grass you choose affects a lot of aspects of how the grass will perform. One of the first things we look at is the finish of the grass, or the sheen. Simply put, how much do you want your grass to shine? Grasses with more shine can appear to have a nice morning dew on them, but if that’s not your style, de-lustered grass has a more natural look.

When shopping in-store or ordering samples online, you’ll eventually find yourself running your hands over those cuts of turf. What does it feel like? That’s what we categorize as texture; you can have turf that is more soft like Arizona Platinum Spring.

And now we get to color! You said you wanted green, right? Again, great start. But, I have to ask, what kind of green? Our grasses come in a few different shades; olive, spring, and field are the most common.

The grass blade can be a ton of different shapes: v-shaped, wave-shaped, flat, c-shaped, hollow, double diamond, and that’s not even all! Well, gee, that just seems excessive, doesn’t it? We don’t think so. We want you to have every option to choose the best fake grass for your project, and all those different shapes have a huge impact on your grass’s performance. 

For example, willow blades (found in grasses like Playscape Premie) combine softer and firmer blades which gives a solid mix of flexibility and strength. A grass like Neo Terra Patriot has c-shaped blades that are great for reflecting away UV rays and keeping the grass cooler.

If you know that you’ll be walking on the grass or have kids or dogs that will be playing on it, keeping the grass cooler with Cool Yarn is a must. Some blade shapes divert those hot UV rays better than others; something like the Pet Pro grass has a u-shaped blade that excels in temperature control.

Accessories

And, finally, after going through the project application, traffic, and blade profile, you’ve decided on the best fake grass for you. Take a moment, celebrate, and then back to business. Let’s talk accessories.

Any installation needs to have the right accessories to keep that grass looking and feeling its best. We have a few different infill options: silica sand, Zeolite, and HeroFill. Again, depending on the project type and your budget, you’ll find that one works better for you than the others. For example, if your pets will be using the space, using an infill that controls odors is essential. MellowFill and Zeolite are great options for pet-friendly areas.

Program Overview
Participants can receive a rebate of $2 per square foot for converting grass areas into qualifying drought-resistant landscapes. Maximum rebate amounts are:

• Residential Accounts: Up to $3,000 per fiscal year (July 1 to June 30).
• Commercial Accounts: Up to $6,000 per fiscal year.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for Modesto’s landscape rebate, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Water Utility Customers: You must pay your water utility bill to the City of Modesto and have an account in good standing.
• Property Tenants: Tenants must obtain written approval from the property owner or manager.
• Existing Turf: At the time of pre-inspection, the area slated for conversion must have existing grass or traditional sprinklers intact.

Application Process

1. Pre-Inspection: Submit an application and schedule a pre-inspection to verify existing conditions.
2. Approval and Notice to Proceed: Applicants receive a Notice to Proceed upon approval.
3. Project Completion: Applicants have 60 days from the Notice to Proceed date to complete the landscape conversion.
4. Post-Inspection: Schedule a post-inspection with the City of Modesto Water Conservation Department after completion.

Important Considerations

• Receipts: An original itemized and dated sales receipt for materials used in the conversion is required during post-inspection.
• Rebate Limitations: The rebate cannot exceed the actual cost of the materials used.
• Compliance: Adherence to all program guidelines is mandatory for rebate eligibility.

Program Deadline
Modesto’s landscape rebate applies to turf replaced between July 1 and June 30 of the current fiscal year. Apply early, as funds are limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. For more details and to apply, visit the City of Modesto’s Turf Replacement Program page.

Grooming

The fastest and easiest way to perk that grass back up is to use a power broom. Though they may look intimidating, if you can use a vacuum, you can use a power broom. Power brooms will stand up those grass blades and reduce the look of matting. And it’s not just right after install! You can use a power broom to perk up those blades any time they’re looking a little sad. Typically, with normal residential use and the regular cleaning mentioned later in this article, this type of process will need to be performed about once a year. Purchase Green offers power brooms in both the plug-in electric and gas-engine variety. Depending on how much traffic your grass gets, you’ll be able to gauge if renting or buying is a better option for you. Or if you want a simpler option, larger debris such as leaves or blooms can be easily removed with a rake or brush, while a hose will take care of smaller debris or dust. Grass surfaces that are used less frequently don’t have to be cleaned as often, but we’d still recommend giving it a quick rinse twice a month or so. 

Cleaning

When developing a comprehensive cleaning plan for your turf, consider how it’s being used. The specific use of the grass will have an effect on the ways it should be maintained. When using artificial turf at a personal residence, priorities may include the cleaning of dog waste and ensuring a safe surface for kids to play. Another important factor is how much dust is in your area. For a dry, desert climate, in particular, regular cleaning is important.It’s critical to note that, no matter your turf’s use, periodic deep cleaning is essential to maintaining the look and feel of the surface.Maintenance of artificial turf fits into two categories: regular cleaning and more thorough deep cleaning or rejuvenation. In order to make sure your turf remains in the best shape, it’s essential that you clean it regularly, in addition to occasional deep cleaning.Best practice is to clean artificial turf each week if it gets heavy use or experiences significant dust or debris accumulation, such as leaves or blooms. If your artificial turf gets less use or dust is less of a factor, this cleaning can be less frequent, but rinsing at least twice a month is still recommended.In addition to weekly maintenance, it’s best to also do a more comprehensive cleaning either monthly or every three to four months if the turf gets infrequent use. Use a flexible lawn rake, or a stiff-bristled broom or brush (be sure to avoid metal bristles, since these can damage the artificial grass), to remove debris from the turf.

Deep Cleaning

You’ll want to watch out for bacteria/odor build-up on your grass. Noticing any persisting odors? Try doing a turf-deodorizing using our Turf Cleaner or another non-toxic cleaner. If you’ve decided to install artificial grass, first, congratulations on making a wise, water-saving decision. Not only will artificial grass help to significantly reduce your water consumption, it also provides you with a beautiful, functional lawn that will pay for itself in just a few years.

Excavating

Once you’ve determined where you want to install your artificial grass and the dimensions of your soon-to-be-amazing new lawn, it’s time to start excavating your existing soil. Excavating soil is a critical step in a proper artificial grass lawn installation. The native soil that will be excavated will be replaced with a sub-base. What is artificial grass sub-base?

Why Sub-base?

But, you may wonder, why do I need to install a sub-base? Why can’t I just install my artificial grass on the soil as is? The answer has to do with some basic scientific principles – expansion and contraction. Soil naturally expands and contracts over time depending on climate. For natural grass this presents no problem because it is growing in the soil. For artificial grass, however, such expansion and contraction can result in buckling, wrinkling and an uneven surface.

This grass is being installed next to a hard concrete edge

The solution for preventing this is to replace the soil with a substance that will not expand or contract. A proper sub-base comprised of either class II road base (also known as crushed miscellaneous base or CMB) or decomposed granite will provide an excellent foundation for your artificial grass and will help ensure you get the most out of your investment.

CMB vs DG

CMB is a blend of recycled concrete and/or recycled asphalt and consists of a sand-gravel mixture of varying-sized particles up to ¾ of an inch in size. Decomposed granite, or DG, is granite rock that has weathered to the point that it readily fractures into smaller pieces of weak rock and/or into mixtures of gravel, sand, and silt-size particles of clay. Both are great materials for your sub-base. CMB is more easily compacted than DG but doesn’t drain quite as well. DG, meanwhile, yields a smoother finish than CMB but it is quite a bit more expensive. Generally, CMB is the best choice for artificial grass in landscaping while DG is the best choice if you’re installing a putting green.

Sub-base Compacting

Once you’ve decided on the appropriate sub-base material, it’s time to shake a leg…and everything else too! After you’ve spread the sub-base material over your installation site, your best option for a proper installation is to use a vibratory-plate compactor. You may also opt to use a roller and a hand tamper to get those hard-to-reach areas and tight corners. Oh, and be sure to wet down your sub-base as you’re compacting it to help remove any voids or air spaces.
